Critical praise for the Creature in STC’s Frankenstein
In October 2011, Ed portrayed the role of the Creature in the Tim Kelly adaptation of Frankenstein at the Sacramento Theatre Company. Here are some of the reviews he received:
“The astounding performance here is by Ed Gyles Jr. as the monster. Gyles creates an overall sympathetic character out of one that has done so much evil and threatens to do more.”
- Bill Burgua, Sacramento Press
“Ed Gyles Jr. fearlessly essays the wretched, artificial ‘stitched-together man’ who has very human desires.”
- Marcus Crowder, The Sacramento Bee
“[Mary] Shelley also gave eloquent lines to the intelligent, stitched-together creature, played here by Ed Gyles, who uses stylized acting and creepy makeup to otherworldly effect.”
- Jeff Hudson, Capitol Public Radio
“Gyles makes the creature almost likeable, and we definitely feel the pain of his isolation, but then we remember that for some unexplainable reason, he killed Victor’s young brother and we see that he is capable of flying into rages when frustrated. He is Lennie, in Of Mice and Men, but with more stitching.”
- Bev Sykes, Davis Enterprise
